Thinking Outside the Box- HUBER Technology’s submarine doors provide alternative Safe Access Solution

Bullimore service reservoir

Working with customers to find innovative safe access solutions has always been one of HUBER Technology’s priorities, and the need to challenge conventional designs to find cost effective, operationally efficient, secure alternatives has never been more important.

A good example of this was the selection by Yorkshire Water of HUBER Technology’s submarine doors, as part of the upgrade of their Bullamoor service reservoir complex.

The service reservoir forms the hub of the regions distribution system with inputs from the local water treatment works. In order to meet the future forecast supply demand, the installation of an additional tank was required.

The twin compartment reinforced concrete tank was installed alongside two existing tanks, and included design principals introduced by Yorkshire Water:

  • HUBER Technology TT7 water & pressure tight submarine doors
  • Monolithic construction

To enable safe access into the tank for cleaning, without the use of ladders, inward opening HUBER TT7 water & pressure tight submarine doors were incorporated into the outlet valve chamber, leading to an internal precast concrete staircase. The security of the tanks was enhanced further by the elimination of covers on the roof.

The monolithic tank construction reduces the risk of ingress through joints (a common source of bacteriological contamination for service reservoirs).
