  • Function

The plant is fed with the mixture of grit, water and organic material via an inlet pipe and vortex chamber into the Coanda Tulip. With the Coanda effect a predefined flow path can be accurately recreated in the inlet zone, thus the whole volume of the tank can be utilised to its maximum capacity for separation.

Due to the differences in density of the incoming materials, lighter organic particies are kept in suspension and carried over the outlet weir with the water, whilst the heavier particies settle themselves out into the settlement hopper.

Settled solids are deposited on an intermediate perforated plate fixed in the hopper of the grit classifier. Wash water (typically final effluent) is fed into the base of the hopper. The upward flow through the perforated plate combined with the agitation of the stirrer causes separation of organic matter from the grit partioles.

Grit particies accumulate at the bottom of the hopper while organic material rises. Rising organic material becomes entrained in the radial flow from the Coanda Tulip and is discharged with the effluent for biological treatment. In order to achieve effisient separation of grit from organic material a balance between the inflow of grit slurry and the upward flow of washwater must be maintained.
