On the occasion of the IFAT 2008 the Huber Technology Foundation will for the first time award the Huber Technology Prize.
Subject of the Huber Technology Prize 2008:
Wastewater – a source of
The prize will honour ideas, concepts and results of research that are an innovative contribution to the reuse of energy and valuable materials from wastewater.
In the past, wastewater was frequently referred to as a dirty, stinking and disease causing broth for disposal. All these attributes may certainly be true, but nevertheless it is worthwhile thinking of wastewater as a source of valuable materials. After all, wastewater contains heat that can be used. Wastewater further contains energy-rich organics which can be used to produce heat and electric energy. Wastewater also contains nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Last but not least, after adequate treatment, wastewater becomes water that can be reused for different purposes, even as drinking water. The use of energy and valuable materials recovered from wastewater is an important contribution to sustainable water management in urban and rural areas, industries and agriculture. However, it is required to develop and provide innovative methods on the sectors of planning, process engineering, operating management and control. Students and doctorands who have made a contribution any of these subjects are invited to submit their ideas, concepts or completed projects to the Huber Technology Foundation jury.
Material to be submitted:
- Personal data sheet (tabular Curriculum Vitae)
- Brief, concise and generally understandable abstract of the competition papers (not longer than two DIN A4 pages)
- Poster (DIN A0) presenting the starting situation, idea or concept, methods applied and results
- Optionally a CD with demonstration material (maximum play time: 3 minutes)
Evaluation criteria
The focus of the jury evaluation will be on the following criteria:
- Innovation degree
- Creativity
- Functionality
- Acceptance prospects
- Profitability
- Economic benefit
Endowment
The winners receive prize money and a certificate. The prize will be presented to the winners at the occasion of the IFAT 2008 opening. Huber Technology takes over the travel costs for participation in the prize award ceremony.
Prize money:
1st Prize: 10,000.- Euro
2nd Prize 5,000.- Euro
3rd Prize 2,500.- Euro
We reserve the right to divide the prize money if two or more of the submitted papers are considered to be of equal merit.

Conditions for participation
Entitled to participate are students and doctorands of both national and international universities or colleges of higher education.
Students and doctorands who have written their diploma in Huber Technology are not entitled to participate.
With their participation all participants confirm that they are the sole author of the submitted paper or the representative submitter for a team of authors. In the latter case, the written agreement of all team members must be attached to the original.
The name of the contestant must be included on all papers and documents.
The Huber Technology Foundation shall have the right to publish free of charge any submitted papers and documents of the award winners, together with the winner’s name, within the scope of documentations, publications or exhibitions, whether national or international.
